Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistlerooy will miss the start of the new season due to injury.



The prolific centre forward, who has scored 116 goals in 145 games, will have an operation next week and is expected to be out of action for a month.

Alex Fergusson must choose between Louis Saha, Alan Smith and Diego Forlan for Sunday's Charity Shield.

Judging by the performances in pre-season friendlies, Alan Smith looks likely to take the first berth.
