What does it take to make a game?

How many people does it take to make a game?
Development teams are growing at an incredible rate. In 1999, when I first joined the Tony Hawk team we had about 25 people compared to the 300 that were involved in making Splinter Cell 3 in 2005.

How long does it take to make a game?
It is fair to say that most games are developed within 12-18 months. Obviously the scale of the game plays a big part in the time it takes to create with games such as Doom 3 taking upwards of 3 and 4 years.

How much does it cost to make a game?
Again, this varies upon the scale of the project but in north America it is almost impossible to develop a game for less than $1,000,000. A game such as 'Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory' cost upwards of $10,000,000 to develop with another $10,000,000 spent on marketing.
